Info on Mammoth I and II

The Race

race-to-the-mammoth-peloton

  • First place gets a mammoth tattoo by Pierre Sahmel done on-site. If you don’t want it, don’t win the race!
  • Register starting at 10am 9am at the McKinley statue in the Panhandle (at Baker Street).
  • Race starts at 11am 10am.
  • The route is still being finalized, but expect about 60-70 miles. The route this year will be about 75 miles with about 7,000 feet of climbing. Like last year, we might include some mixed terrain. There will be some dirt, including one tough dirt climb.
  • Prizes will be awarded for female, fixed, and general categories. Check out the sponsors page for prize info. Everybody will get a raffle ticket for a chance to win something.
  • We’ll transport one bag for you, from SF to Pescadero and back. Pick up your bag on Sunday at Dolores Park, where I’ll be posting up for several hours in the afternoon into the early evening. If that doesn’t work for you, we can figure something out.
  • If we have rain we will either honor the registration on a makeup date or refund your money, your choice.

Casual Ride

race-to-the-mammoth-music-bike

The casual ride is for folks who are interested in a mellow cruise down to Pescadero. Though the pace will be mellow, please be sure that you are a competent rider capable of riding 50+ miles with hills. All riders should come prepared with their own tools/parts for basic roadside repairs—minimally, this would include a multitool, patch kit, spare tube, spoke wrench, pump, and lights.

  • Register starting at 10am 9am at the McKinley statue in the Panhandle (at Baker Street).
  • Casual ride starts shortly after the racers push off at 11am 10am.
  • The route is still being finalized, but expect about 50 -60 miles. Some light mixed terrain may will be included on the route (Planet of the Apes), but nothing a road bike couldn’t handle.
  • Everybody will get a raffle ticket for a chance to win something. Check out the sponsors for prize info.
  • We’ll transport one bag for you, from SF to Pescadero and back. Pick up your bag on Sunday at Dolores Park, where I’ll be posting up for several hours in the afternoon into the early evening. If that doesn’t work for you, we can figure something out.
  • If we get rain we will either honor the registration on a makeup date or refund your money, your choice.

Dinner/Party/Sleeping

dasbike-race-to-the-mammoth-2-ari

  • All participants and volunteers will be provided with plenty of food and beer.
  • Festivities will follow dinner.
  • wiggitywhack will be spinning jams ’til the beer runs out. More live music is also in the works.
  • There are several spots to camp around the farm. Get in where you fit in, pick a spot, and pitch your tent. The main campsite has a water fountain (the closest to the spring) and an outhouse. You may also want to bring a headlamp, detachable bike light, or flashlight.
  • We’re encouraging folks to bring tents (or sleep under the stars, it’s nice out there), but if you don’t, we’ll definitely find you a sheltered spot for you to sleep in. Regardless, you should at least bring a sleeping bag and pad.

Getting Back to SF

race-to-the-mammoth-short-bus

We’ll be doing Sunday, June 20 drops at the top of the hill to the Menlo Park Caltrain station. We’ll run the bus as long as it takes to get everybody to the top of the hill for a downhill ride of about 15 miles to the Menlo Park Caltrain station. We can also provide you with directions all the way back to SF, as well as directions to get you up over the hills to the Menlo Park Caltrain station (about 30 miles from the farm). There might also be room for a couple of folks & bikes to ride all the way back to SF in the short bus, but don’t count on it.

We will likely not be doing hill drops this year. You have to ride back to San Francisco or ride to the Caltrain station on your own or as a group with others. We’ll hook you up with directions.

We’ll transport one bag for you, from SF to Pescadero and back. Pick up your bag on Sunday at Dolores Park, where I’ll be posting up for a few hours in the afternoon into the early evening. If that doesn’t work for you, we can work something out.

We go with the flow out in Pescadero, so we aren’t on any tight time schedule. If you have to be back in SF by a certain time, it may be best for you to ride out whenever you need to instead of counting on the bus leaving at a particular time.

Bring Your Own Big Wheel Needs Your Help!

BYOBW

For the uninitiated, BYOBW is the coolest tricycle-related event in San Francisco each year, probably the coolest in the world, let’s be honest…

But all hyperbole aside, this is one of the city’s finest community-organized events, and this year its facing increased costs and its certainty is in question.

Support the things that make this city rad and Donate to BYOBW– anything helps!

If you’ve never been, you owe it to yourself to check it out and pitch in, and if you’ve been you don’t need my spiel and you’ve already donated $20.

Hope to see you on your finest 3-wheeled joy-rig this Easter on Vermont street!

Healdsburg-Ukiah triple (quintuple) brewery 200k!

Posted by Francisco on March 21, 2014
Posted in: Beer, Events.

Santa Rosa Cycling Club’s Healdsburg-Ukiah 200k was last weekend!

Last year we stumbled upon Anderson Valley Bewing Company’s tasting room (and disc golf course, no shit) along the route, cool! The route also finishes at Bear Republic, cool! But we heard last time that we had missed Mendocino Bewing Company’s ale house , dammit!

So this year we decided to make it our triple/double brevet (3 breweries/2 hundred kilometers). I found this sweet skull:

dasbike-santa-rosa-cycling-club-beer-brevet-skull

And we stopped and drank beers along the way:

dasbike-santa-rosa-cycling-club-beer-brevet-anderson-valley2 dasbike-santa-rosa-cycling-club-beer-brevet-mendocino-ale-house dasbike-santa-rosa-cycling-club-beer-brevet-anderson-valley

But at the finish, drinking some fine Bear Republic brews, Bob told us that we missed two breweries! Ukiah Brewing Co. and Ruth McGowan’s were right along the route too! Next year it’s on, we’re doing all five in one brevet.

dasbike-santa-rosa-cycling-club-beer-brevet

But maybe we should “test ride” it over the course of a multi-day tour starting from SF? We could include quite a few more breweries and beer bars along the way (Russian River, 3rd Street, Lagunitas, Mill Valley, Iron Springs, Marin, Mt. St. Helena, Barley & Hops), not to mention hot springs & lakes to swim in. Yes.

P.S.

The hot tub at the America’s Best Value Inn was cold because we didn’t ask for it to be hot in advance, and there was a channel on the TV that just congratulated us on owning a sweet satellite dish.

Cyprian’s Center, 2097 Turk (at Lyon)
SF, CA

As usual, come eat food, drink beer, and watch a bike movie! Food served around 7:30pm, movie starts around 8pm. COME EARLY to help out!

ALSO! We’d superly appreciate any food you could bring to share! I’ll be away this weekend, thus won’t be able to glean quite as much as usual, but we’ll make it work! Bring anything and we’ll use it (half a box of pasta? Some wilting greens? That can of beans that’s been on your shelf for a year? Whatever).
